Hi babes! I’ve kinda been on a hiatus (real life happens, ya know?), but I am finally not M.I.A. anymore and finding some me time to get back into blogging again! Well what the hell have I been doing, right? Welllll, May was the craziest month for me! At the beginning of the May, I went to Powerhouse (you know the giant hip-hop concert that Power 106 throws every year) where it rained and then HAILED! Rest in peace to my favorite grey suede Vans 😭. The weekend after that my best friend from middle school, Danielle MARRIED the love of her life Peter in San Diego! It was the most beautiful weekend to get to witness their love for each other. I finished my last semester of college in December, but I graduated (FINALLY) and got to walk with my friends! It was also my 26th birthday! Yes, I am a Memorial Day weekend baby haha. AND on top of all this, I moved! More on that later! Last month kept me busy to say the least and I am now finally feeling settled in!
ANYWAY! Graduation! Yearsss ago I told Darryl that he had to shoot my grad photos and before we knew it, it was quickly approaching and it was time to plan! I tend to always have an idea of what I want, but I love his input as well. He always tells me, “it’s whatever you want ma” (his exact words every time I can show you the text haha), but what usually happens is I throw some ideas around and when he gets sick of my indecisive-ness, he’ll finally throw in his ideas/thoughts haha. Buttt this time, it was a unanimous decision to shoot at one of our favorite places, The Getty. I was so thrilled that he agreed to shoot at the Getty because the Getty itself means so much to me! It was one of the first museums I went to visit for my Modern Art class and before I knew I was finding myself there every chance I got staring at Irises by van Gogh! The Getty wouldn’t let me wear my cap and gown so some of my photos are from the Getty and the rest were taken at CSUF. 🙂
College is truly what you make of it. Even though I spent more time looking for parking at Cal State Fullerton (because we’re a commuter school) than in my actual classes, I loved every minute of my time there. I was so lucky to have the most passionate professors for both my major and minor! Even though I took longer than the usual 4-5 years to finish college, I don’t regret a thing. I would 100% say that I owe my professional experiences to my time with the L.A. Clippers and the Anaheim Ducks and that in itself made the extra couple of years in college so worth it.
When I applied to college, I applied to two colleges: University of Nevada, Las Vegas and California State University, Fullerton. I’m thinking now that it probably wasn’t my best idea to only apply to two colleges, but it was pretty much a given that everyone would get into UNLV and I had my heart set on leaving Vegas/going to CSUF. I ended up going to community college to do some gen ed classes and it ended up working out for me because I got California residency which meant in-state tuition!
So two and a half years ish (give or take a little) go by at Riverside Community College and the day finally came where I got to transfer to Cal State Fullerton, I was always a Communications major (even at RCC I was a Broadcast Journalism major), but I started off as Public Relations concentration. Truthfully, I had NO idea what Public Relations even was or what it even meant. Somewhere in-between all of the gen ed classes I took, I ended up taking my first Public Relations class and Intro to Advertising in the same semester. All it took was one class and I fell in love with advertising, before I knew it changed my concentration to Advertising and never looked back.
^ my cap almost hit Darryl in the face 😂
One of the best decisions I ever made in my college career was to join AdClub. What’s better than joining a club where everyone you meet all share the same passion as you?! Nothing! Not only did AdClub have the professionals in the field come to us every two weeks, but we also came to them and got to tour many agencies! The first agency tour I ever took, I got to bond over 2000s R&B with now my four favorite humans and we still all keep in touch til this day. When I look back at my experience, it’s things like that that made me truly cherish college.
The other best decision I ever made was to study abroad! It’s true what they say, it is the most life changing experience! I studied the art of Frida Kahlo and Muralism in Mexico City and Guanajuato. I knew two people when I signed up to go on the trip: Rose, my art professor and a big reason why I minored in Art History and Kristi, my classmate from Italian Renaissance Art with Rose. I’d be lying if I didn’t say the it took some convincing from Rose to get my dad to agree to let me go, but when he finally did I was nervous, excited, anxious, and all of the emotions! It’s one thing to hear Rose lecture in class, but it was another thing to see and hear how amazing and passionate she is in front of the actual piece of artwork that we were studying. Not just a piece of artwork, a freaking mural. Needless to say, I now have a thing with murals and Mexican Art in general. Mexico changed me in the best way possible and I’m happy to say I came home with a lottt of new friends. We all still keep in touch and support one another in everything we do and we are all actually working on a really cool project that I can’t wait to share with you all soon!
As I have gotten older, I have realized how important it is to NETWORK. My former boss, Carly at the L.A. Clippers taught me many things, but she always told me how important it is to network. One of the first agencies I visited with AdClub was Dailey, and I ended up interning with them last summer and then getting hired full-time! So listen to your boss guys, they know what’s up!
Looking back at my college experience, I am grateful for every little bit of it! If it weren’t for the tears, the laughter, and sleepless nights, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. What were some of your favorite memories from your college experience? I would love to hear about them!
Hope everyone has a fun 4th of July weekend! Thanks for reading friends, talk soon! xx
Endless Rose – I bought this dress TWO years ago at Nordstrom Rack and saved it ever since for graduation! And yes, I promise I will find something else to wear now. 😂
Sandals – Topshop (old from last summer)
Heels – BP (so good, I got the nude pair to wear for Danielle’s wedding!)
My wonderful and beautiful friend Katelyn did my makeup! She totally understood my vision and completely killed it! Special shout out to her and her magical hands for making me feel pretty!
A HUGE special thank you to my sweet friend, Darryl. He is one of my favorite people and the most talented human on the planet. I cant thank him enough for capturing all of my special memories! xx
